Attendance Policy

Attendance Policy
HRS, Sec 302A-1132 states that unless otherwise indicated, all children must attend school daily. (Once Kindergarteners enroll in school, all state/school laws/rules apply.) Kanoelani is tasked with monitoring each child's attendance as dictated by Hawaii State law and informing parents of their child's current attendance status.
Although tardies are treated as a separate issue, it is nonetheless a part of our attendance policy and is monitored and followed as well.
Days Absent  Action
3  Teacher contacts parent
5+  Letter #1 to Parent
10+  Letter #2 to Parent - conference with teacher, counselor, and administration
Letter #3 to Parent - conference with counselor, administration, social worker
20+  Conference with social worker, administration, possible family court referral
Please contact the school whenever your child is absent. This documentation is important when we meet with the social worker and family court liaisons. Please note that illnesses, as reported by parents or doctors, are documented on your child's record but we continue to list absence days when reporting out to parents. If you have any questions, please phone Mr. Ohira or Mrs. Shibuya, our school counselors.
Family vacations during the school year are not condoned. If there is an emergency that requires you to take your child out of school for a period of time, please make an appointment with the school's Principal to discuss the situation.
